View(s):All about fish
Fish are aquatic animals. Some are edible and some are ornamental. We usually get to see fish in the sea, rivers, lakes etc. All fish have a backbone and most breathe through gills and have fins and scales. Fish swim around in the water and its tail helps it to swim.
Fish have been living on earth for millions of years even before the dinosaurs were on earth. The body temperature of a fish changes according to the surrounding temperature and so it’s called cold-blooded. The largest fish is the Great Whale Shark. The Philippine Goby is one of the smallest fish in the world. Fish have excellent senses of sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. Fish eat other fish, aquatic plants and algae. Whales and seals are some mammals found among fish.

Alice in Wonderland Ballet
‘Alice in Wonderland’
was a Ballet organized by the
Deanna School of Dance which
is my ballet school.
The students from Grade 2 upwards performed in it. I was in Grade 1 so I didn’t have a part in it. But my Mum and Dad took me to watch the ballet. We were waiting to go inside Balcony 2 which had not opened yet when I met my friend Dinaya, her mother, father and sister who were also going to watch the show. So we decided to watch it together. When the doors finally opened the queue started moving. It was a tight squish! Everyone was trying to push their way through. When we all got inside, Dinaya and I took seats next to each other and waited excitedly for the show to begin. It seemed to take forever but it started in a while.
It was magnificent. It was the same story as the book but told only by dance and music. The narrator explained everything in the beginning. With only a short interval in between, the show went on continuously. When it ended, Dinaya and I were very disappointed. But it was a wonderful show and I enjoyed it very much!

Books
There are different kinds and different sizes of books in the world. Books that can be read on the internet are called e-books, which are very popular. Books give us knowledge and it is the main element in education. Some books have some negative sides too. We must learn to choose the correct books.
Books give you good company when you are alone. Reading is a good habit because ‘Reading makes a man perfect’.

My pet
My pet is a cat. Its name is Kitty. It likes to eat fish and drinks milk. My father brought it from my grandmother’s house. Its colour is white and it has four black spots on its back. It likes to play with me. My mother doesn’t allow me to keep it near me. But when I sleep, I keep it on my bed.
It bites our legs when it’s hungry. When I go somewhere, it runs after me. It cries ‘mew, mew’ and licks my hand. At that time I feel that it is better if it can speak like us. It comes near us and gets on our laps and sleeps.
I love my cat very much and I wish God’s care for it.

My country
The most beautiful and wonderful place in the whole world is my country Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a tiny island in the Indian Ocean. Because of its pearl type shape, everybody calls it ‘The Pearl of the Indian Ocean’. Ceylon, Thambapanni, Lakdiva, Heladiva are some of the other names for Sri Lanka. The capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.
My country is full of natural beauty. Rivers, mountains, waterfalls, paddyfields and beaches are some of them. The longest river in Sri Lanka is the Mahaweli and the tallest mountain is Piduruthalagala. Ramboda, Diyaluma, Dunhinda, Devon are some of the beautiful waterfalls and the Bambarakanda Waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka.
The hill country is covered with tea plantations and Ceylon Tea is popular all over the world. Ratnapura is world famous for precious gems. Foreigners are amazed by seeing the ruins of the ancient kingdoms like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhala Buddhists and the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is placed in Kandy Dalada Maligawa. The other nationalities like Tamils, Muslims and Burghers live peacefully in my country.
Sri Lanka is a great country and I am proud to be a Sri Lankan.

Nursery Rhymes (Contd..)
Baa Baa Black Sheep
“Baa Baa Black Sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes Sir, Yes Sir,
Three bags full,
One for the master,
One for the dame,
And one for the little boy who lives down the lane.”
This nursery rhyme isn’t actually that innocent.
The rhyme was inspired by the wool industry in the medieval period and the unfair conditions that existed then.
Note that the original 4th line has been modified from the original poem that ended: ‘And NONE for the naughty boy who cries down the lane’
In the Wool Trade, after the wool is harvested, the master would get one bag, the ‘Dame’ or Lord who owned the land that the farm was on, would get one bag and of course, the little (shepherd) boy would get none.

Autobiography of a pencil
I am a pencil. My name is Nataraj. I was manufactured in India. From the factory in India I was sent to Sri Lanka to Sarasavi Bookshop. At the Sarasavi Bookshop I had lots of friends. My best friend was Atlas Chooty.
I was frightened to see lots of people in the bookshop. Among them was a little girl. She pulled me out of the box. I felt very scared. When she smiled at me, I felt happy. She took me to school and showed me to her friends. But one of her friends broke me. The girl felt very sad and threw me into the dustbin.

Trees
Do you know about trees? What is special about trees? I love trees. They give us shade, fruits, they give us oxygen by taking the carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Because of trees even the environment has been beautiful. If we cut a tree, we must plant ten more trees. I have a jak-fruit tree and a guava tree. We must grow trees well to get those use of trees I’ve wrote already.

A place I like to visit during the holidays
I think Jaffna is a marvellous place to visit. It is located in the Northern Province, at the coastal belt. Tamils call Jaffna, ‘Yalpanam.’
Jaffna is famous for palmyra. I like to eat juggery made by palmyra. Northern sea is gorgeous and it has an attractive blue colour. I like to have a bath and swim in the sea. I have also heard about the marvellous Casuarina Beach in Jaffna.
The ancient Jaffna Fort was ruled by Portuguese and Dutch. It is located in the southern area of Jaffna peninsula. I saw in a newspaper that there are about one-hundred thousand books in the Jaffna Public Library.
I like to visit the world-famous Nallur Kovil made for Lord Murugan. I also like to visit Naguleswaram Kovil. I wish to visit Nagadeepa, which is a Buddhist temple. It is one of the holiest Buddhist shrines.
Nilavarai Well, situated in Jaffna is famous for the natural underground water which never gets depleted. I like to visit the statue of King Cankili II riding his horse.
Lots of foreigners as well as locals visit Jaffna. I am also planning to visit Jaffna in the school holidays.
