Saints’ Cricket clash for Gary Melder Trophy
View(s):The cricketers of yesteryear from two leading Catholic institutions St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s will battle it out for the ‘Garry Melder Memorial Trophy in a 25 over match to be played today at St. Peter’s grounds from 9.30 a.m. onwards. The memorial trophy played in honour of Gary Melder — one of the top schoolboy cricketers produced by St Joseph’s and captained the school in 1973. This is the 15th match in the series. The inaugural match was played in 2001 and from the 14 matches that have been played so far the Peterites lead the series with eight wins as against to the six won by the Josephians.
There will be special awards — for the best batsman, best bowler, best fielder best all-rounder and the man of the match. There will be a prize for the batsman who scores the most number of boundaries also. Ranmore Martinez an ICC elite panel umpire who is an Old Peterite will be the chief guest and interestingly in a departure from the accepted norm, he will also be a member of the Peterite veterans outfit. The two Rectors, Rev. Fr. Trevor Martin (St Peter’s) and Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel (St Joseph’s) will grace the occasion as the guests of honour.
