JO candidates win cooperative polls
View(s):Candidates supporting the ‘Joint Opposition’ have secured victories in several cooperative society elections.
In the latest elections for the Arachchikattuwa Cooperative Society in the Puttalam district this week, the group supporting the ‘Joint Opposition’ secured 175 votes while the SLFP faction supporting President Maithripala Sirisena obtained one vote. The UNP-backed candidates received nine votes and JVP two votes.
SLFP MP Sanath Nishantha, who was recently removed from the organiser post for supporting the Joint Opposition wasamong those who contested in Arachchikattuwa.
Though cooperative society elections are not held on a party basis, most of the candidates campaign on party lines.
In Madampe, Joint Opposition loyalists secured 141 votes as against the UNP’s 40 and the SLFP’s one. The Joint Opposition-backed candidates also secured victory in Ambalangoda. They received 47 votes while the UNP got 25 and the SLFP 12.
The cooperative society elections are held under the supervision of the Cooperative Department at provincial level to elect members to run Co-operative societies.
