View(s):A place I like to visit during the holidays
I like to visit the ‘Dutch Period Museum’ situated at Prince Street, Pettah during the holidays.
This building earlier belonged to the Dutch Governor, Thomas Van Rhee.
This museum has a large collection of antique furniture. The baby crib which was made of ebony and satinwood was the cutest amongst them. The tables, chairs and beds were all used by the Dutch Governor. The most fascinating thing was the glass painting of a mother and child. This painting was done with different colours including gold.
The cooking utensils were interesting. There were moulds in different shapes, used to make sweets. Sri Lankans have taken away many culinary items from the Dutch. All kinds of weapons used by them are still to be seen. I enjoyed looking at these things and was surprised to see them.
This made me read and study about the Dutch period in our history. I wish that other children would also get a chance to visit this lovely place.

Caught in the rain
I was going out to play but I felt a little cold. I looked up and saw dark clouds appearing. The climate changed. People were hurrying to their homes. People were rushing to take their clothes from the clotheslines. Birds flew to their nests. Some made peculiar sounds.
It started to rain. I could not go home. I got wet.
I was feeling very cold. Some people were wearing raincoats and some people were with umbrellas. Water was trickling down from my body. I started shivering. I ran as fast as I could. The roads were slippery but somehow I managed to reach home.

Unity in the family is the path to peace and harmony
“Family; like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain the same.”
‘Family’ is a very powerful thing. Years ago, families used to be networks of togetherness and love. They went on outings together, ate, laughed and even cried together. Their bond was golden.
What can you say about families these days? When was the last time your family had a decent meal together or went out together just for fun? Some ‘busy’ families don’t even have time for an “I love you”. They have such busy daily schedules that there’s no time for bedtime stories, goodnight kisses or family meals.
When children are not given the extra TLC they need, they become very disturbed adults. Adults like Adolf Hitler for example. Since he did not have the freedom he needed when he was a child, it resulted in World War II and he later committed suicide. Because of his unhappy childhood, he not only ruined his life but also killed many other innocent people.
Do you see the importance of family? On the other hand if you take St. Mother Teresa’s childhood, she lost her father when she was eight but her mother didn’t give up. She earned for her family and also found time to love and care for them. And today Mother Teresa is a saint.
If all families try to have at least 30 minutes a day to be together and show each other how much they love one another, the world today will be really different. From hate to love, from anger to forgiveness and from war to peace, it all starts from home.

Technologically developed, morally rotten
The Earth has now reached the point of blasting, where it would be destroyed forever. Humans have ruled all over the Earth for billions of years and now the more developed it is, the more the Earth is at risk of ending.
Technology is the main reason for Earth to end. The more developed technology is, the more animals are killed, the more the environment is polluted and the more humans die. The saying, ‘technologically developed, morally rotten’, has become true.
Our ancestors didn’t have the faintest idea of luxury apartments, well developed cities and houses and so much improved technology. So they lived in peace and harmony without falling to the place where the Earth will be destroyed. If we had brains like our ancestors and we thought twice before doing something, we wouldn’t have been so worried about the thought of dying forever.
Let’s try each day to protect, preserve and care for our Earth and develop technology so that it won’t hurt Mother Nature’s feelings and that it won’t destruct the Earth.

Pleasure of reading
In our leisure time we will fall into the habit of laziness. So we must cultivate some work. It may be manual work or mental work that we can get pleasure by doing something. We can read books, newspapers, magazines. There are a flood of books written by many kinds of authors. Once Bacon said, “Reading maketh a full man.” Reading is a cure for boredom and we can get pleasure.
When we are reading we must know what we read. Well written books transfer us into another world. Reading expresses our thoughts, our feelings. It creates intelligence. It raises us to the highest level of life. So when reading we can get pleasure. Students must read books according to their subjects. We can improve knowledge as an oyster creates pearls out of itself.

Who can it be?
Tok, tok, tik – tok, tik, tok
Tok, tik, tik – tik, tok, tok
Who can it be? I should just see
But I can’t see – Who can it be?
Who can it be? – Tapping on the door
I should just see – now tapping on the floor
Now tapping on the floor –
Or is it the door
Someone is there – Who is there?
I ask and ask – But no answer
Again and again – I ask and ask
Is it the baby downstairs?
Or Sally dancing upstairs?
Or someone tapping a drum –
It seems to be a drum
Is it a beetle tapping? –
Or is it a person tapping?
I should just see – but I can’t see
Oh! No! It’s the rain –
Why didn’t I have any brain?
It is falling on the door –
it is falling on the floor
