Malaysia may ban group which attacked our envoy
View(s):The Malaysian Government is considering a ban on the group that attacked Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Ibrahim Ansar at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in September, authorities there informed a visiting senior official of Sri Lanka’s Attorney Generals’ Department.
Senior Additional Solicitor General Dappula de Livera was told by the Malaysian authorities that the group behind the attack had been identified and a ban was under consideration. The Malaysian Police have also taken steps to charge the suspects with unlawful assembly, mischief and causing hurt.
Mr. De Livera who undertook the visit at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on the Directions of the Attorney General met Malaysia’s Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) and other officials probing the attack on Mr. Ansar and Deputy High Commissioner Majintha Jayasinghe.
The Sunday Times learns Mr. De Livera said Sri Lanka was hopeful there would be a comprehensive investigation and all those responsible would be brought to justice as the case was of international significance.
During the visit Mr. De Livera also met Malaysia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Secretary General of the Ministry of Home Affairs and senior police officials.
The case will be taken up in a Malaysian court again tomorrow.
