British flash fiction author Simon Harris will be conducting an introductory workshop in Colombo for aspiring flash fiction writers on Saturday, December 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Flash fiction is an umbrella term used to describe creative works of extreme brevity. Such stories are usually under one thousand words and frequently much less. Flash fiction is one of the most popular and accessible literary genres supported by numerous print and online publications as well as a plethora of international competitions

Workshop participants will learn a variety of techniques for crafting complete and compelling short-short stories. They will critically examine a number of outstanding examples by contemporary authors and be guided in creating their own works of flash fiction.

Resident in Sri Lanka, Simon’s work has been published in Flash “the world’s leading journal of quality flash fiction and reviews up to 360 words” and has received international acclaim in the Huffington Post. His longer stories have appeared in Ireland’s Crannog Magazine and Trinity College Dublin’s Icarus. “The Rolled Back Beach” an anthologyof short stories set during the tsunami disaster includes seven of Simon’s pieces and is published in Sri Lanka. Simon has a master’s degree from the University of Oxford and studied creative writing at the University of East Anglia.
