Crown Prince of Perlis invites Sri Lankan students
View(s):Step off the beaten track was the advice from no less a dignitary than a Crown Prince from Malaysia who led the pitch for students from Sri Lanka to join the University of Perlis, a small state in Northern Malaysia close to the Thai border.
A delegation from UniMAP (University Malaysia Perlis) led by the Raja Muda (crown prince) of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and including 25 student leaders, made a week-long visit to Sri Lanka culminating in a stopover last Sunday at the Padang, the home of the Sri Lanka Malay community, at Slave Island.
In his address to the large gathering, Tuanku Jamalullail, who is also the chancellor of UniMAP, called on Sri Lankan students of all races and religions to seriously consider his small state Perlis as a destination to complete higher education aspirations.
While hundreds of local students enroll every year in universities in and around Kuala Lumpur – Monash, Taylors, etc – UniMAP has still to attract a Sri Lankan. “I hope there will be a Sri Lankan soon in our community of more than 13,000 students,” wished the chancellor.
The delegation was feted by the Sri Lanka Malay Association, the Sri Lanka Malay Cricket Club and the Sri Lanka Malay Association Rupee Fund. “Although we say Nasi Makan (rice eat) and not the correct Makan Nasi (eat rice), we have close ties with Malaysia and its people. I hope this will continue in the future too,” said Hussain Jayah, President of the SLMA. Â -(AS) Â
