Roshan, Sajeewa help Galle CC
The right and left arm spin combination of Roshan Jayatissa and skipper Sajeewa Weerakoon shared nine wickets to help Galle CC record a well deserving first innings win over fancied Tamil Union on the second day of their Premier Tier A inter-club cricket encounter concluded at the Galle International Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Tamil Union came into the field on day three in a strong position having ended day two on 228 for 1 in reply to Galle CC’s 352 runs. The overnight pair Sithara Gimhan and Tharanga Paranavithana was able to add only another four runs as they were separated with the dismissal of Tharanga who made an 84 with the pair having put on a 184 runs stand for the second wicket.
Skipper Kithruwan Vithanage who followed, did not last long being dismissed for a duck after which Gimhana and Jeewan Mendis added 54 runs for the fourth wicket and the dismissal of Sithara for 127 saw Tamil Union losing wickets at regular intervals.
Apart from Pramod Madushan who made an unbeaten 32 the others failed to make any impression as they bowled out for 338 and in the process lost their remaining nine wickets for the addition of only 100 runs.
NCC held the edge over Chilaw Marians in the match being played at the NCC ground after they had made a formidable 385 on day one which came on the back of a fine knock of 113 by Sandun Weerakkody supported by half tons from Nimesha Gunasinghe and Niroshan Dickwella.
The second day’s proceedings saw Chilaw Marians in their turn being given a fine start of 78 by openers Vidura Adikari and Shehan Jayasuriya. Later skipper Mahela Udawatte, who was unbeaten on 78, which had ten boundaries put on a valuable 69 runs for the third wicket with Rohit Damodaran, but they lost quick wickets and slid from 194 for 3 to 285.
A knock of 112 by Udara Jayasundera and 79 by Roshen Silva has put Ragama CC are in a strong position against Moors SC at the end of the second day’s play at Braybrooke Place.
Ragama CC having bowled out the home team for a score of 217 and ending day one on 180 for 3 went on to post 361. Overnight batsman Jayasundera who was unbeaten on 85 on day one added 133 runs for the first wicket with Lahiru Malintha and followed with a 78 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Lahiru Thirimanne. Later Roshen Silva who hit a 79 added 49 runs with Ishan Jayaratne for the seventh wicket for Ragama CC to end their innings with a formidable 361 runs. Moors SC batting the second with a deficit of 144 runs was badly placed on 120 for 6.
Saracens SC too has taken a first innings lead over BRC when play stopped on day two in the match at the BRC ground. The second day’s play saw BRC resuming from their overnight score of 23 for no loss was able to muster a score of only 197.
The opening day’s play saw Saracens SC, thanks to half tons by Umesh Karunaratne, Irosh Samarasooriya and Denuwan Rajakaruna making 302.
Bloomfield from a strong position of 134 for 3, in reply to Badureliya SC’s 156 saw them collapse for a score of 233 at Reid Avenue to take a first innings lead.
Apart from skipper Nipun Karunanayake who made a 109 and Adeesha Nanayakkara 79 who together associated in a 146 runs stand for the fourth wicket the others failed to even reach the double figures which saw them collapsing at 233.
CCC took a slender two run lead over Army SC at the CCC ground. CCC having made a modest 218 which came on the back of half tons made by Sachith Pathirana and Lahiru Madusanka successfully, restricted the Army SC resuming from their overnight score of 92 for 3 to a score of 216. CCC batting the second time was 165 for 1.
