A trip to the North turned into a tragedy last afternoon when 11 people travelling in a van were killed in a head-on crash with a Sri Lanka Transport Board bus at Sangathani in Chavakachcheri.

Police said initial investigations revealed that the driver of the van had lost control and driven straight onto the oncoming bus heading from Jaffna to Vavuniya.
Nine of the van passengers were killed on the spot while two died after admission to the Chavakchcheri Hospital, Police said.

Eighteeen bus passengers and the bus driver who were injured in the collision are receiving treatment at the Jaffna Hospital. Among the dead are six males and five females, all residents of Millaniya in Horana.

In one of this year’s worst road disasters, this van ploughed into a bus at Chavakachcheri yesterday, killing 11 people. The horrible tragedy occurred while the Government and private bus operators are embroiled in a controversy over the fine to be imposed for reckless driving. Pic by Lohathayalan
