Lankan Supreme Court lawyer admitted as Solicitor in Australia
View(s):Menik Gunasekera, an Attorney at Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka was admitted last week as a Solicitor in Australia taking her oaths before Justice Henry, Judge Morzone Q.C., and Judge Harrison of the Supreme Court of Cairns, Queensland.
Ms. Gunasekera joined the well-known firm Julius and Creasy in her early years as a lawyer and then moved on as Human Resources Manager of Airlanka and later SriLankan Airlines. She then became Human Resources Manager of Qatar Airways and was stationed in Doha.
She became a Solicitor of England and Wales and earned an International Relations Diploma from the University of Colombo. She also holds an LL.B from the Queensland University of Technology.
Her husband, former Senior Prosecutor Tisara Gunasekera making the ‘Mover’s Speech’ seeking the admission of his wife to the Queensland Bar said that after Ms. Gunasekera ended her jet-setting life she chose marriage over career and joined him, her former Law College friend in Mount Isa in Queensland and set up home.
“It took time for her to settle in the outback life,” Mr. Gunasekera said. “Ms. Gunasekara joined Centacare North Queensland Family Services as a Family Dispute Resolution practitioner. She was promoted to the position of Programme Manager Family Services overlooking 11 programmes in Mount Isa and Cloncurry including Family Dispute Resolution.
“While working in that capacity in 2012 Ms. Gunasekera became the mother of triplets who now are her pride and joy. Having the children motivated her to complete her legal studies in Australia which she did while engaged in a full time career and looking after her family.
“Today she remembers her family who always supported her in whatever she embarked on. Her mother is here coming all the way from Sri Lanka to grace the occasion. She wants to pay tribute to her late father who had been the guiding light in her career and the two brothers who have always supported her.
“Also, she is very grateful to her husband for agreeing to move her admission,” Mr. Gunasekera said.
