The Government this week granted approval to a Hindu religious group to arrange a ferry service from Kankesanturai (KKS) to Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, to attend a Hindu pooja in Chidambaram, said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

“It was decided, in consultation with Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray, to initiate the process early next year, as it is difficult, given the time constraints, to get all logistics worked out for this year,” Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Mahishini Colonne, told the Sunday Times.

She said the Ministry is planning to start the process early next year to realise the Hindu devotees’ pilgrimage next year.

Earlier, a Hindu religious group called “Eelam Siva Senai” sought approval through Governor Cooray to facilitate a ferry service for Siva devotees to participate in the Thiruvathira festival on full moon poya day in December, at the Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram.

The pilgrimage is scheduled to take place between December 28 and January 13. This week, the organisation directed the devotees in the North, who wish to participate in the pilgrimage, to register at their offices in the respective districts.
