29th World Universiade Games in August
Sri Lanka University Sports Association is making arrangements to a send a team of 40 to 50 competitors for the 29th World Universiade Games to be held from August 19 to 30, 2017 in Chinese Taipei. Twenty two sports are included in these 12 day games. They is: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Diving, Fencing, Football, Golf, Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Judo, Roller Sports, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Water polo, Weightlifting, Wushu and Billiards.
Sri Lanka is hoping to take part in seven sports. They are: Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Weightlifting. Selection trials for the games will take place in March 2017. The Sri Lanka team first started taking part in the World Universiade Games in 1973. They did not take part for 14 years. From 1987 Sri Lanka participated in the games without a break.
The World Universiade Games are held every three years. It was last held in 2015 in South Korea where 56 from Sri Lanka participated, representing seven sports. 170 countries are taking part in the World Universiade Games and over 9,000 athletes are taking part.
