Sri Lanka Badminton Association conducted a Level I Coaching Training Course at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Stadium, Bandarawela from December 12 to 14 which was attended by participants from Badulla, Bandarawela, Ampara, Colombo and Gampaha districts.

The Training Course was conducted by Mahesha Ekanayake – a World Badminton Federation certified coach, a professional coach and a Sports Ministry certified Fitness Instructor with nearly two decades of coaching experience and was assisted by another World Badminton Federation certified coach Dammika Wanigasekera.

In this training course which was coordinated by the Uva Province Badminton Association the participants were given theory and practical knowledge in the basics of foot-work, shots, warm-up and down techniques, badminton rules and regulations, the basics of coaching beginners and coaching principles by the course tutor Ekanayake. At the conclusion of the course the participants under went a practical test for evaluation where a majority were successful.

T.G. Karunaratne, M.Z. Shifal, M.Z. Shiran, R.M.S. Ratnayake, Sandun Bandara, Tilini Siriwardene, L. Dilmi Perera, Sameera Madusanka, Susantha Rajapaksa, I. Nandana, G.W. Upali Ranjith, Indika Punarjeewa, R.M. Sajith Ratnayake and Sandeera Hannegedera.

Speaking to the Sunday Times coach Mahesha Ekanayake said about the importance of conducting coaching and training courses of this sort in the other provinces too to enable coaches and players to gain more knowledge and technique of the game as badminton is an island-wide popular game. Ekanayake went on to say watching the young talent available in the country, they should be guided well. That will be the duty of the coaches and this type of coaching courses will give them proper guidance to fulfill the task. He also thanked the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and the Uva Province Badminton Association in helping the event a success.
