The annual Sri Lankasports.com Inter-Co. Netball Championship, inaugurated in 2006, will be conducted on January 21, at the St. Joseph’s College Indoor Stadium in Colombo.
The event will be held in two categories, Women- 12 Teams and Mixed- 8 Teams. The Women’s category will be played for Cup, Plate and Bowl Championships, while the Mixed category will be only for the Cup Championship.
At last year’s competition, Seylan Bank regained the Cup Championship beating Hatton National Bank 28-27 in a tense final. Expo Holdings won the Plate Championship beating David Peiris Motor Co. 23-6 in the final. Kanrich Finance took the Bowl Championship beating Sri Lanka Telecom 22-4. In the Mixed category Seylan Bank outclassed Nations Trust Bank 14-11 in another thrilling encounter to take the title.
Sri Lankasports.com Inter-Co. Netball Championship has introduced 7-a-side Rugby format for Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield in a 7-1-7 minute match duration to Netball in Sri Lanka, at the inaugural Championship in 2006, and continued to add more features during the next three years up to 2009.
Introduction of “Power Play” concept to Netball in Sri Lanka, is also one of the new features introduced at the event. Sri Lankasports.com Inter-Co. Netball Championship created history by conducting the first ever Netball tournament in an indoor stadium, when it was held at the Sri Lanka Youth Indoor Stadium in Maharagama and at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively.
They have organised Sri Lanka’s first ever Under (U)-19 Schools’ Futsal event (Sri Lankasports.com Futsal Challenge) under the direction of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka and The Sri Lanka Schools’ Football Association, for two consecutive years.
Sri Lankasports.com is also responsible in organising Sri Lanka’s first ever day-night Inter Club Beach Football tournament. They also created history by organising the first ever U-15 Inter School Handball Championship in Sri Lanka in 2012.
