THE POSTPONED CYCLING BASH
View(s):All were expecting a big cycling bash to mark the occasion when the Big Man came into power. It was planned for seven days to a distance of 900 km far exceeding the distance and time when the former Big Man came into power seat. There were several clashes between officials regarding the staging of this event. Finally the organisers decided to postpone the event to a later date … not to be staged on the exact date that the present Boss came into power.
LADIES POWER STRUGGLE
There is a ladies power struggle in the most popular sport in the country. A former ladies skipper, who has entered wedlock, wants to make a return to the sport’s administration. Blocking her way is the wife of a well known cricketer who is holding centre stage in the administration at the moment. The outcome of this power struggle is eagerly awaited by all and sundry.
WHAT COST FOR A
RUNNING TRACK!
It is a well known fact that there is a severe shortage of running tracks in the country with the main stadium undergoing repairs. Already a staggering sum has been spent on renovating this track and there is a running battle between tenders to take charge of the repairs as the amount set aside by the Treasury for the project is Rs. 50 Million. Naturally the battle is bound to get intense as time goes by.
BOOM TIME FOR KURUNEGALA
Back to tracks and sports grounds again as it has been reported that plans are afoot to set up new grounds in the outstations to promote sports activities. But the strange thing is that Kurunegala has been allocated several top level venues while places such as Killinochchi and Mulativu have not been granted a single ground. Who could be promoting Kurunegala so much?
THE DANCING SPORT
The sports budget for 2016 is ready to be released which has hit Rs. 67 Lakhs. But the strange thing is that a sport quite unheard in sporting circles – Ballroom Dancing – heads the list with three individuals being sent abroad to attend seminars abroad.
371 MEDALS
Just for the record, around 3,000 athletes have gone abroad this year up to September. Nearly 200 athletes had attended the SAF Games in India and the others have gone on various sporting assignments. The total number of medals won by Sri Lanka is 371 while the expenses stand at Rs. 250 Million
