The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA-central bank) has launched its annual survey on expenditure by Maldivians going out on international travel.

According to Maldives media reports, the central bank announced that the survey was being held at the arrivals terminal of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport from December 24 to December 30.

The survey covers the reasons why Maldivians travel abroad, the countries Maldivians travel to, the cost of tickets, expenditure on food and accommodation, expenditure on medical treatment, and the total expenditure per trip.

The MMA said that information by individuals who participate in the survey are confidential.

The 2015 survey on international travel expenditure showed Maldivians mostly frequently travelled to Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia and Thailand.

“1,574 Maldivians travelled to Sri Lanka and then returned to the Maldives in 2015, spending an average of US$554 per person,” the survey showed, adding that “1,535 Maldivians travelled to India and then returned to the Maldives in 2015, spending an average of $524 per person; 222 Maldivians travelled to Malaysia and then returned to the Maldives in 2015, spending an average of $1,062 per person; and 219 Maldivians travelled to Thailand and then returned to the Maldives in 2015, spending an average of $844 per person”.
