Ananda recorded a convincing ten wicket victory as they inflicted Dharmapala MV’s sixth outright defeat of the ongoing Under 19 inter-school cricket season in the match concluded at Pannipitiya yesterday. However the most significant for the day was the one-inning ten wicket haul of by Thurstan’s left-arm spinner Naveen Gunawardena who achieved a rare bowling feat.

The lad finished with impressive figures of 10 for 36 against D.S. Senanayake MV on their home strip at Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha.

At Pannipitiya, Ananda was home for tea as the writing on the wall was there for Dharmapala MV when play ended on day one after being bowled out for 98.  Then, Ananda thanks to Sahan Suraweera’s knock of 106 and a 63 by Kavindu Gimhan ended the day in a strong position.

The second day’s play saw Ananda declaring their innings with a score of 229 for 4. Dharmapala MV batting the second time with a deficit of 131 runs managed only 132, leaving Ananda just two runs for victory which they needed just two balls.

Maris Stella coasted to a four wicket win over Zahira in a low scoring match which ended at Maradana yesterday. Maris Stella after bowling out Zahira for 117 ended day one in a strong position of 102 for 3.

But on resumption on day two saw them losing wickets at regular intervals with Mohamed Mahdi who ended with a five wicket haul doing the early damage before making a score of 130 for 9 declared.

Zahira batting the second underwent the same fate as in the first inning Ravindu Fernando running through their batting with impressive figures of 6 for 31 to bundle them out for 113.

Maris Stella in quest of a run chase of 101 runs too underwent some anxious and was struggling on 77 for 6 before they reached the target in 43rd over with Mahdi’s match of ten wickets being in vain.

Gurukula MV Kelaniya too was home for tea when they crushed Moratu MV by innings and 67 runs in the match concluded at Moratuwa. The foundation for Gurukula MV’s win was laid by Teshan Malinda who made an unbeaten 103 and Lasinda Aroshan

Naveen Gunawardena

.

The duo’s knocks helped Gurukula MV to make a score of 241 for 7 declared after bundling out Moratu MV for a low score of 78. Moratu MV batting the second time on day two with a deficit of 163 runs put in another poor batting performance as they were able to muster a score of only 96 runs.

Meanwhile Naveen Gunawardena achieved the rare bowling feat to etch his name in the records book of a schoolboy cricketer taking all ten wickets in an innings with the return of 10 for 36.

Naveen in this rare feat bowled 20.5 overs which included six maidens to bowl out DSS for 125 in reply to Thurstan’s 206 for 8 declared which came on the back of a knock of 106 by Charana Nanayakkara which helped Thurstan record an easy first inning win.

In the process Naveen became the third schoolboy cricketer to achieve this feat following Somasiri Ambewatte of Mahinda who achieved it in 1953 against traditional rivals Richmond and Lionel Fernando of St Benedict’s against St Anne’s Kurunegala in 1963.
