Kandy march over Army resolve

View(s):

Kandy as expected by scoring a comfortable 50 points (5 goals, 3 tries) to 19 (2 goals. 1 try) win over a fighting Army team at Nittawela.

Kandy’s talent lies in the back division. Yet, yesterday it was the superb defence of the forwards that made such a win possible. Time and again, the Army’s powerful forwards positioned themselves a yard or two short of the line but were thwarted by a resolute defence.

Roshan Weeraratne scored from the kick off almost when he scored near at the left corner flag. There was hardly any opposition. Damith Dissanayake was next to go over after Kandy’s outsides kept attacking in the Army 22.

Richard Dharmapala scored a dandy try when an inside pass was switched to him and he sliced through the Army defence. A poor defence enabled Shehan Pathirana to zig-zag his way to the line. Thilina Wijesinghe converted all four tries for Kandy to total 28. However, Asela Jayalal, in the meantime, was literally powered over the line by a couple of Army players. Salinda Gayan’s conversion meant that lemons were taken at 28-7.

Army started the second half with fresh, more vigorous intent. The forwards forced play deep into Kandy’s 22. The ball was sent out to winger Thusitha Senanayake who overcame some resistance to go over for an unconverted try (28-12).

There was a bit of confusion about the next try which was awarded to Kandy by Referee Priyantha Gunaratne after consultation with the Touch Judge (33-12).

Skipper Munasinghe took a short tap and went over before the defence recovered. Salinda Gayan added the points (33-19).

Soyum Anthony followed with a try after Kandy had put Army under pressure. Thilina Wijesinghe converted.

Uchita Jayasuriya who came on late in the game helped himself to two tries to make the final tally 50-19.

Army may have lost the game, but surely they must have won quite a few admirers by their gallant display.
