International hotel chain Movenpick opens in Colombo
The Movenpick Hotel that opened in Sri Lanka for the first time has an infinity pool that its developers believe has the same feel similar to another star hotel frequently marketed from the Middle East.
So Colombo has matched up to market its accommodation facility that overlooks the city and seeks to beckon travellers passing the commercial capital to its latest address with 24 floors and 219 rooms.
The property owned by Ashok Pathirage, the innovator of Softlogic who is also set to have more plans for increased properties, last week opened Movenpick Hotel Colombo with President Maithripala Sirisena as chief guest.
The media release indicates that this is the considered the destination’s first urban hotel and introduces a “vertical experience” with every floor, from the ground to the roof, offering a different themed concept.
All 219 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows and the Rooftop Bar overlooks the city and located in proximity to the market and other historical sites.
The hotel also has a French restaurant the Brasserie, Robata Grill and Lounge serving Japanese cuisine and sushi; all day dining venue AYU; Vistas Rooftop Bar and Lounge, the exclusive Mansion bar and night lounge; the chic Lobby Lounge; and the Pool Bar.
It also houses a gymnasium and the Spa Ceylon with signature treatments using natural oils and herbs, the release noted.
Softlogic’s Dr. Stephan Anthonis said at the media briefing that this hotel would cater to the gambling enthusiasts from India and travellers moving in and out of Colombo. He also later noted to the Business Times that they would be catering increasingly to the MICE travellers interested in hosting their events there.
Movenpick Middle East and South Asia COO Matt Matmuller noted that they were looking at more hotels in the future.
The new GM at the hotel Marcus Martin said that this hotel would play host to the vertical experience and called it the modern, fund, urban and cool location.
