Heavy showers no dampener for gritty Havies

The heavy downpour which came down on Havelock Park yesterday proved to be helpful to the Havelocks. The Park Club waded through the mini-pool which resembled their grounds ultimately helped them to down Air Force 37-29 after being tied all 17 all at the breather.
Air Force scored first try in the tenth minute through Iddamalgoda and five minutes later Muthuthanthri touched down for Air Force again to make it 7 all. Ramadas scored for the Airmen next and Iddamalgoda was in kicking form to make it 14-7 in favour of them. Dulaj Perera booted over a penalty for the Havelocks and they trailed 10-14.
Jason Melder touched down for Havelocks next to make the score 14 all. This was the score at ‘lemons’.
Dulaj Perera was again in form for Havelocks on resumption and very soon they were ahead at 20-17. This was the first occasion that the Park Club took the lead in the game. Havelocks further increased the lead through another Dulaj Perera try and led 27-11.
At this juncture the rain came down in buckets and very soon the grounds resembled a muddy pool. Havelocks scored through Muthuthanthri next to take the lead at 30-7. Then came a try by Madusanka and Havies increased the lead to 37-17.
Air Force tried their best to overhaul the Havelocks score but they were hampered by the wet ball, muddy conditions and the driving rain. Just before the long blast Iddamalgoda touched down to take the final tally to 37-29 in favour of the Park Club.
The rain, poor visibility and the mud beneath prevented the media from going to get the accurate scores. It was the officials at the desk who came to their rescue to give the try scorers and keep a tab on the game.
