The Moratuwa Municipal Council has come up with a novel system to solve the problem of solid waste.
The program is directed by the Moratuwa Municipal Commissioner M.M.C.K. Mannapperuma and implemented by the staff led by Chief Public Health Inspector (PHI) Malinda Jayawardana.

Under the new scheme solid waste as for example disused computers, computer parts, bath fittings etc which prove difficult to remove under the normal garbage collection system are collected and separated. A solid waste sale of goods collected was held at the Veera Puran Appu grounds on February 24. The sale drew an excellent response, many persons were seen purchasing old computer parts, bathroom fittings and used furniture at nominal rates.

The program aims at clearing items that might be conducive to the breeding of Dengue mosquitoes when discarded.
Funds earned from the sale go to the Council’s Dengue eradication program.  It is now planned to hold similar sales once in three months.

Some brought van loads of goods to the sale

Used bottles, plastic water bottles which provide mosquito breeding grounds or may have polluted the sea are among the items brought to Moratuwa’s ‘garbage sale’

Municipal workers sort out the collected waste

Items like old computers, printers etc. were among the discarded goods on sale at the ‘pola’
