The family of a patient admitted to Lanka Hospitals claim the hospital made a life-threatening blunder by providing the wrong blood type for the patient as she was being prepared to undergo surgery.

Lanka Hospitals Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prasad Medawatte confirmed he had been informed of the alleged incident, and was personally looking into the matter.

The 87-year-old patient was to be given A positive blood just before her surgery. The family, however, had pointed out her blood type was in fact ‘O’ Negative, and insisted on getting a second blood report. According to the family, the second blood report confirmed she was ‘O’ Negative. Family members said the woman’s life may have been in serious jeopardy, had they not demanded a second blood report.
