Royal College Docs’ Association holds annual health screening programme

General practitioners, medical specialists and dental surgeons from the Royal College Doctors’ Association (RCDA) were part of the 150-member team which held the annual Teachers’ Health Screening Programme on February 19 at the Navarangahala for more than 350 teachers of Royal College and their family members.
This was the 18th consecutive annual medical camp held for present and past teachers of Royal College. The programme included physical examinations and where necessary laboratory investigations, echocardiograms, ultrasound scanning and two-dimensional echos. A well woman clinic which included a gynaecological and breast examination, ultrasound scanning and PAP smear investigations was conducted; the dental clinic included general oral examinations and dental procedures; and Consultant Ophthalmologists examined the teachers for eye problems.

The medical examinations covered a variety of fields such as general medicine, respiratory medicine, neurology, nephrology, cardiology, rheumatology, psychiatry, gynaecology, oncology, radiology, endocrinology, dermatology and gastroenterology. Advice was also provided on gastro-intestinal surgery, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, uro-genital surgery, plastic surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery, eye surgery, vascular surgery, oro-maxillo facial & dental surgery, physiotherapy and nutrition.
Those teachers who required further treatment were directed to various hospitals and medical institutions, while free reading glasses and spectacles were offered at a discount by a company, which provides a mobile service during the screening programme.

Among those present at the medical camp were Royal College Principal B.A. Abeyrathne and Past Principals S.H. Kumarasinghe and B. Sooriyarachchi, Senior Deputy Principal P. Wickramasinghe, Deputy Principal Rev. Sr. S.D. Siyaguna, Assistant Principals Ashoka Galahitiyawa and Amith Dharmapala, Senior Games Master M.A.M. Riyaz, Past Teachers’ Association President Capt. M.N. Dharmaratne, its Secretary S.M.R.G. Dharmawardana, Teachers’ Guild President Sarath Thisera, Royal College Union Secretary Athula Munasinghe, its Asst. Secretary Mithila Mendis, School Development Society Secretary Keerthi Elvitigala, RCDA President Dr. Ajith Tennakoon and its Secretary Dr. Sapumal Haggalla.

The health screening programme’s chief organizer was Dr. Mahesh Kumbukage who was supported by Dr. Lagath Wanigabadu and Dr. Nilanka Sandhyal.
