The SAARC Cultural Centre will celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 with a cultural evening featuring a performance by Thuuryaa, the all-female drumming ensemble and honouring several leading female artistes. The event will be at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7 p.m.
Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga along with leading artistes Iranganie Serasinghe, Vajira Chitrasena, Sumithra Peries, Nanda Malini and Mary Anne David will be honoured at this celebration.

These distinguished pioneers have paved the way for future generations of women with persistence, versatility, hard work, courage, integrity and continue to share their knowledge with grace. They have widened the landscape of possibilities and given young girls the hope and power to dream without boundaries. It is our privilege to honour them, a press release from the SAARC Cultural Centre said.

Thuurya, the young female drumming ensemble has stormed a male-dominated art form, embracing the Kandyan, low-country and Sabaragamuwa rhythms.
