Swara Layam 8 Violin trio from three traditions
View(s):Meeting of three major musical traditions, Carnatic, Hindustani and Western in one platform ‘Swara Layam 8’, will feature a violin trio at 6.15 pm on March 27 at Ananda Samarakone studio of SLBC.
Organised by the Tamil Service of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, ‘Swara Layam’ is an effort to bring the beauty of rich music from various tradition.
Three violins in unison will be played by Shanmuganathan Dibaharan (Carnatic), D. D. Gunadena (Hindustani) and Sanath Sathischandra (Western) they would be accompanied by Ratnam Ratnathurai in Mridangam, Chamara Hapanagama Yapa in Tabla, Indika in drums and Shaluka Hettiarachi in double base.
D. D. Gunasena is a violinist, vocalist and musical composer who has over 40 years professional experience. He has been given the “Kala Bhushana” award for his contribution to the development of Sri Lankan music. He is well versed in Hindustani, Karanataka, and Western discipline of music. He has performed around the world, including Europe, America, India and Australia.
One of the leading Carnatic violinists in Sri lanka, Shanmuganathan Dibaharan is a disciple of Isai Gnana Thilakam Ruthrapathy Radakrishnan of Inuvil Jaffna. Holds Isai Kalaimani title from Ramanathan Aesthetic institute of Jaffna university. Instructor in Carnatic music at the university of visual and performing arts, Dibaharan is one of the most sought after violinists for music and Bharathanatya programmes locally and abroad.
Sanath Sathischandra is a violinist in western music and is a disciple of Ananda Dabare and a graduate from Royal college and Trinity college of London. He is attached to the university of visual and performing arts as a visiting lecturer in violin.
Visharada Ratnam Ratnathurai, son of Kalasuri T Ratnam is attached to permanent orchestra of SLBC and he is a recipient of Bunka Award from Japanese Government. A teacher of Mrithangam and Tabla he has travelled widely on cultural tour to UK , Canada, Australia, Swiss,France, Norway, Germany, India and Singapore.
