Litterbugs turning Kataragama into a garbage dump

The Sacred City of Kataragama attracts many visitors from all parts of the country. It is claimed the city receives more visitors than many other sites country-wide.

But having so many visitors visit has its down-side as well. Pilgrims, tourists and visitors tend to leave behind large quantities of garbage.

Today garbage can be seen strewn everywhere, even along the banks of the Manik Ganga, with visitors paying scant attention to the environmental damage they are causing via carelessly dumping polythene and food waste .

The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that religious leaders, the police and local authorities have commenced programmes to educate the public on the need to keep the city clean and free of garbage.

Among the measures adopted are encouraging people to take their refuse away with them. However creating awareness alone is not sufficient and there is a critical need for a proper garbage disposal system.
