Dondra-head Lighthouse opens for tourists
View(s):Travellers visiting Sri Lanka and even locals now have the opportunity of freely touring the Dondra-head Lighthouse after the authorities took action following criticism over a mafia group charging the public to enter its premises.
The lighthouse, which is a property of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), was officially opened following renovations and new facilities on Thursday by Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, a media release issued by the SLPA stated.
The Dondra-head Lighthouse was constructed in 1887 by James Nicholas Douglas at a cost of 30, 000 sterling Pounds. At a height of 49 metres it comprises seven floors and has a 196 step staircase.
Considered to be one of the four leading lighthouses in Sri Lanka with international recognition it was renovated by the SLPA in 2000 but remained closed to the public due to security based issues.
Following the new administration the government has made required renovations to reopen this lighthouse to the public. It will be manned by the SLPA security and the authorities have been able to stop groups in nearby villages from charging fees from travelers wanting to visit the lighthouse. At present there would not be any fees levied by the authorities to view the premises.
