Strathspey Estate Factory, Upcot celebrates 90 years
View(s):Strathspey Estate, Upcot, Maskeliya, owned by the Richard Pieris Group and managed by Maskeliya Plantations PLC, recently celebrated its factory’s 90th anniversary. The factory was built in 1927.
The event was marked recently by religious activities and acknowledging the services of staff at Strathspey Estate.
A special souvenir, picture postcards and souvenir mugs were distributed after years of service and millions and millions of black tea being produced under different management.
Today the 4-storey factory has modern machinery. It has a capacity to manufacture 25,000 kg of green leaf per day under the guidance of 50 to 60 male and female workers.
The factory’s first manager/superintendent was William John Forbes Lapal and today it is Seevali Gotabhaya Mudannayake.
The estate originally had six factories belonging to each and every estate coming under a single management. However all these factories were demolished and the present factory was built in 1927.
