May Day Sirikotha shooting: Armed suspect had a self-drafted ‘constitution’
View(s):The policeman arrested for allegedly shooting at the UNP headquarters on May Day, was carrying with him what he called a self-drafted “Constitution”, said a senior police official.
The suspect, Amaraweera Arachchige Sumith Amaraweera (44), currently in remand custody till May 15, in his document, had mentioned that, people under 21-years should be prohibited from using mobile Phones, said Police spokesman and DIG (Crimes) Priyantha Jayakody.
He said they also called for a mental assessment of the constable and await reports to take further action accordingly.
A security officer attached to the UNP head office, ‘SiriKotha’, H.N. Shantha said he was trying to find the phone number of an MP from a police officer on duty at the party office, when he saw a person in police uniform, armed with a T-56 assault rifle, coming from the Pitakotte junction.
“I heard a gunshot. I saw the policeman in middle of the road with gun in hand. He fired the second round towards the party head office,” he said.
Mr Shantha said that another policeman and he yelled at him to stop his action, when the policeman fled with the gun in his hand.
