Mother’s Day
View(s):That one day that specially honours Mothers is looming on the horizon. Mother’s day is happening today!
And if you haven’t prepared here are some quick and easy ideas to make your mother feel special on her day.
But first some history ……
Way back in the 1600’s in England Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honour mothers. After a prayer service in church to honour Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers, by bringing their mothers gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel to honour them.
The idea to officially celebrate Mother’s Day was suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872.
Julia tirelessly championed the cause of official celebration of Mother’s Day and declaration of official holiday on the day. Her idea spread but was later replaced by the Mother’s Day holiday now celebrated in May.
Recognized as the founder of Mother’s Day in the US Anna Jarvis never married and never had children. However she is also known as the Mother of Mother’s Day, a fitting title for the lady who worked hard to bestow honour on all mothers. Anna Jarvis got the inspiration of celebrating Mother’s Day from her own mother Mrs. Anna Marie Reeves Jarvis in her childhood.
Mrs. Jarvis used to express her desire that someday someone must honour all mothers, living and dead, and pay tribute to the contributions made by them.
A loving daughter, Anna never forgot her mother’s word and when her mother died in 1905, she resolved to fulfill her mother’s desire of having a mother’s day. Growing negligent attitude of adult Americans towards their mothers and a desire to honour her mothers soared her ambitions.
Today mother’s day is celebrated in several countries such as the US, UK, India, Denkmark, Finland, Turkey, Italy, Sri Lanka, Canada, China etc.
