In the wake of the Meethotamulla tragedy and no allocated space to dispose of the city’s garbage; mounds of garbage have begun piling up in public places as authorities struggle to find alternative space to dispose of garbage.

Garbage collection is now infrequent at best and people have taken to piling garbage in any space available. This in turn has resulted in piles of garbage, collecting at bus stops, on the roadsides and filling up drains.

These piles of garbage are fast becoming health hazards.

With monsoon rains only weeks away the sight of drains being completely blocked with garbage should set off alarm bells among the authorities.

Not only do these growing piles of garbage increase the likelihood of outbreaks of epidemics such as dengue, they are becoming even more of a menace blocking drains and increasing the likelihood of flooding.

This continued delay in resolving the garbage crisis is only making the situation worse and the cost for the delays will prove costly for all.

Even lamp posts are now used by some to dump their garbage

Public spiritedness has taken a back seat –large mounds of garbage dumped beside the bus stop

This trader has taken to collecting his garbage around his shop

Drains are meant to carry away rain and waste water, but these drains are completely blocked by persons with no civic consciousness
