Matale Hockey sevens on June 24
View(s):Singer – Matale Thomians invitation schools hockey 7s 2017 for boys U/19 organised and conducted by Matale Old Thomians’ Hockey Association with Singer Sri Lanka as the main sponsor, will be held at picturesque Edward Park Hockey ground in Matale on June 24 for the third time.
Blessed with an abundance of hockey talent St. Thomas’ Matale, one of the oldest and leading hockey playing schools in the Island, has produced stickers of National and International fame while elevating themselves to be one of the best schools hockey sides.
With the approval of the Sri Lanka schools hockey association and Ministry of Education the organising committee has already invited the following leading hockey playing schools across the Island to compete in this year’s tournament.
St. Thomas’, Vijaya, Christ Church, Zahira, Sirimavo Bandaranayake MV from Matale, Royal, S. Thomas’, Nalanda, Ananda, Wesley and D.S. Senanayake MV from Colombo, Trinity, Kingswood, Dharmaraja, St. Sylvester’s and Vidyartha from Kandy, Jaffna Central and St. John’s from Jaffna, Dharmadutha Badulla, Maris Stella from Negombo, Bandaranayake MV from Gampaha, Joseph Vas from Wennappuwa, St. Aloysius and Mahinda from Galle and St. Thomas’ from Matara.
According to the tournament director Indrawansa Herath the winners will receive A.J. Wijesingha memorial challenge trophy presented in memory of late A.J. Wijesingha former Principal of St. Thomas’ Matale, while the runner up is entitled to A.P.B. Harasgama memorial trophy presented in memory of late A.P.B. Harasgama who was an Old Thomian and the former president of Sri Lanka Hockey Federation.
C.K. Hulangamuwa Memorial trophy in memory of squadron leader late C.K. Hulangamuwa (former national and international hockey player and old boy of St. Thomas’ Matale) will be awarded to the second runner up team. Apart from that the best player of the tournament will receive Asian Hockey Star – Ranjith Wijekoon trophy while Dampiya Wanasingha Challenge trophy will be awarded to up and coming player of the tournament. In addition special awards are on offer for the best player of each team that qualify for the quarter finals.
