Over 800 players in action from May 26
The 102nd Colombo Tennis Championships one of the oldest and most popular tennis tournaments in the country is scheduled to be worked off from May 26 onwards at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo.
The championships conducted by the SLTA playing section with Vision Care coming forward again as the main sponsor and supported by Perera & Sons and Ralhum Trading (Pvt) Ltd will see over 800 players in both the junior and senior categories in action.
The 17 day tournament due to end on June 11 is the one of the two Super âAâ Grade tennis tournaments to be conducted which attracts the cream of the tennis players in Sri Lanka.
Events in the age groups of U12, 14, 16 and 18 along with the menâs and womenâs open singles are scheduled to be worked off. Apart from that veteran event in the age groups of over 34, 45, 55 and 65 players will also be held. In the junior category a player can take part in a maximum of three events out of which one has to be a doubles event and all singles events will be of three tie break sets, but the doubles events rules will differ according to the age groups. The organisers have made arrangements matches to be played under floodlights too if the need arises due to bad weather as well as the entries as the tournament is likely to attract close to 800. Udith Wickremasinghe is the tournament director and Derrick Ellawala will be the tournament referee and Anjana de Silva the chief of umpires which will also have two experienced and ITF qualified officials.
