Battle of the Queens – It’s Cricket!

Oh! It was our first ever big match which was played on May 4, 2017 at the Kettarama grounds.
It was a sunny day but in the evening it started to rain a little. It was the match between Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha. Our team captain was Amasha Sithmi. It was a 40 Over match. Our school colours are Gold and Black and their colours were Gold and Green.

The Rathnavali team won the toss and started batting. We waved our school flags, cheered and danced too. We watched the match sitting in the pavilion eating sweets and tasting ice-cream. Our team scored 156 runs from 37 overs The Ratnavali girls scored 139 runs from 40 overs.
We Anulians won the match!

It was an enjoyable and unforgettable day for both schools. We all enjoyed it very much.

A place that inspires me
I have visited many places.
Every place I have visited has inspired me in some way. The place that has inspired me the most is my hometown, Mawanella. It is situated in the Kegalle District.
Mawanella has a long history and has been one of the main cities in Kegalle. The Mahaweli River, the longest river in Sri Lanka, flows through this city. There are many Buddhist temples and mosques in this city. Muslims make up the highest population in Mawanella. They have some exceptional qualities such as hospitality, unity, sincerity and generosity.

Most of the peoples’ occupation is farming, animal husbandry and business. Crops such as rice, tea, rubber, pepper, cardamoms, nutmeg and vegetables are cultivated in several areas in Mawanella. It is also famous for its traditional handicrafts, especially pottery, brassware and tobacco industries. My forefathers worked hard to earn an honest living in this town.

An interesting fact about this town is that it is historically famous for Uthwankande Soora Saradiel. He was a native who fought against British colonialism. He is known as the ‘Robin Hood’ of Sri Lanka as he plundered the wealth from the British officers and local correspondents only to distribute it among the poor villagers.

The police set out on March 21, 1864 to arrest Saradiel and his gang members. Mammale Marikkar who was a member of the gang, shot a police constable. This was the first time ever that a police constable had died on duty in Sri Lankan police history. The day when Saradiel was arrested was commemorated as the National Police Day in Sri Lanka. Mawanella, my hometown is an inspiring place for me.

Our Atteria Project
We the Scouts of Royal International School, Kurunegala planned to do a project about an Atteria plantation. We discussed all about it and confirmed to organize it on March 28, 2017 at our school grounds.

At about 3 p.m., we started the programme. As the troop leader in the junior troop I began the rally and gave the welcome speech. Directors in the Director Board, HODs, District Commissioners and our school Scout masters were some of our guests. We also invited our school Managing Directress Mrs. Sandra Wanduragala, Director Mr. Ravinath Peris, Director of Administration Major General
Sunil Tennakoon and many others.

After our programme we served refreshments. It was a successful programme. Everyone went home happily. It was an unforgettable day in my Scout journey. It will also be a historical day in the Royal International School Scout history.

My pet squirrels
One rainy day, a squirrel’s nest had fallen out of the tree. We found two small squirrels inside it. Feeling sorry for them, we started to take care of them ourselves. I named them Tico and Dico. It was quite easy to recognize one from another, as Tico was lazy and Dico was active. We kept them in a cage and took them out day by day to play.
Another day, we were really surprised by what had happened. Dico had run away! He had cut through the side of the cage and gone. Still, we don’t know how he managed to escape. We then released Tico too, although he just stayed in the cage after we opened it too. But later, he came out and climbed a tree, but he came back almost immediately.
Dico seems to be fine too. We see him quite often, coming to eat bread crumbs. We tried to release Tico with him too but Dico always leaves before long.
We hope that our pet squirrels will be fine in the future too.
