Nokia’s first android smartphone to change the mobile landscape here

Nokia, one of the most durable and long lasting phones that have captured the hearts of many mobile phone users around the world, on Wednesday launched three of its first android smartphones in Sri Lanka.

HMD Global in Finland has the exclusive license for Nokia acquiring the company, six months back, in December 2016 from Microsoft. In Sri Lanka Softlogic PLC will be the national distributor for Nokia phones while national service provider Mobitel will be the official mobile telecommunications partner.

On the sidelines of the launch of Nokia’s three brand new android phones at the Waters Edge in Colombo, Nalin Perera, CEO of Mobitel told the Business Times that there is no end for technology and for a brand like Nokia it keeps evolving. Mobitel is providing an attractive package for Nokia consumers in Sri Lanka together with the three devices, he added.

“Mobitel is offering attractive voice and data packages for consumers who purchase a Nokia phone from any of the Softlogic outlets islandwide. It is not mandatory that they have to get the service provider package together with the phone,” noted Mr. Perera.

Consumerse were not happy and sales declined rapidly when Microsoft took over Nokia and they were eagerly waiting for an android smartphone under Nokia’s brand name, he stated while confidently mentioning that sales will pick up very fast during the next couple of months in Sri Lanka.

The prices of the three Nokia android smartphones Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 are approximately Rs. 22,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 36,000 respectively. Mobitel offers a package applicable to both pre-paid and post-paid customers of Rs. 150 talk time monthly for three months for all three devices. Nokia 3 will receive 2GB data monthly for four months free while Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will receive 2GB data monthly for six months free.

HMD Global General Manager for Thailand and emerging Asia, Sandeep Gupta also told the Business Times that change is what people believe in and Nokia’s three android smartphones will definitely make an impact on people’s lives.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Gupta noted that 86 per cent of people around the world are using android smartphones today. “Partnerships are very important for us and Nokia being an iconic brand has achieved many milestones and will accomplish further in the future,” he added.

Quality, simplicity, reliability and distinctive design are key features that bring the brand name of Nokia to its peak, noted Mr. Gupta while he stressed that millennials are the target market.
