Largest number of Sea Scouts in the Negombo District for the first time
View(s):“I have noticed that schoolboy Sea Scouts who later joined the Navy, perform better than ordinary schoolboys,” said Rear Admiral (Rtd) Rohan Amarasinghe, in his address as the Chief Guest at the Investiture Ceremony of the Sea Scouts of St. Jude’s International School, Kurana, Negombo, held on Tuesday (23).
It is the first time such a large number, 56 boys and 29 girls, became Sea Scouts in the Negombo District, and received their membership badges.
Speaking further, he said, “I am happy that, these days, there is a tendency among schoolchildren, both boys and girls, to become Sea Scouts. On our part, we too, have a responsibility towards you. So, I will discuss this with the relevant authority to try and have a ship reserved entirely for the purpose of training Sea Scouts.” Addressing the gathering, Principal, Rev Fr Rohitha Rodrigo said, “Now we have understood the importance of having Scouts in our schools. In our school’s curriculum activities, we give priority to Scouts. I give every assistance to them. With them, one can see a better world tomorrow.”
Speaking next, Negombo District Scout Commissioner Lakshan Perera said, “Parents tend to think that only education could make a better child. It is not true. I know, by my own experience, that Scouts, once employed, render a distinguished service in their workplaces. They do extra activities too, cheerfully. They are truly living examples of useful citizens.”
Negombo District Asst. Scouts Commissioner Roy Fernando, assisted by the School’s Scout masters trained the newcomers for their membership badges. The School’s Girls Band escorted the distinguished guests to the podium to hoist the National Flag, Scouts Flag and the School Flag by Rear Admiral Rohana Amarasinghe ,Scout Commissioner Lakshan Perera and Rev Fr Rohith Rodrigo, respectively, to commence the Investiture Ceremony. It was a sea of blue when the boys and girls in their blue uniforms, lined up to welcome the distinguished guests, and later gave their Scout pledges in the School hall.
