The girls of Sabaragamuwa Province clinched the All-Island Inter-Provincial Under-18 Rugby Tournament in grand style beating Western Province by 5-0 in a nail biting final played at the Navy ground in Welisara last week. Eastern Province ‘A’ beat Uva Province by 10-5 to claim the Plate championship while Southern Province ‘A’ defeated North Western Province 10-5 to annex the Bowl title. North Central Province overcame Central Province by 10-0 to clinch the Shield Championship.
Sanoja Kumari Ranasinghe of the victorious Sabaragamuwa Province was declared the player of the tournament for her prolific performance throughout the competition. Over 140 participates representing eight provinces took part in the tournament organised by Sri Lanka Rugby.
According to Col. Dammika Gunasekara, Chairman of Women’s Rugby Development, the main objective of this competition was to provide more exposure to players and also select players for the Women’s Under-18 National squad for forthcoming Dubai tour. The Chief Marketing Officer of South Asian Gateway Terminal and Council Member of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), Ted Muttiah graced the awards ceremony as the chief guest. - NA
