The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said, students who qualify for Advanced Level (A/L) in national schools are being charged exorbitant sums to be admitted to A/L classes.

CTU Gen.Sec., Joseph Stalin said school principals are now charging donations to admit students to A/L classes. Mr Stalin said that, not only are they charging from new students joining the school, but also from those who have been studying in that school from Grade 1.

He said the practice of soliciting donations started for Grade 1 Admissions, then for Grade 6 and now, they are soliciting from A/L students.
“Although several complaints have been made against many schools, the Education Dept has failed to take action,” he said.

“This is against the Govt policy of free Education,” he said. It is evident, he said, that principals are showing callous disregard to Govt policy and blatantly charging for admissions. “The principals are not called on to account for the funds collected, and no one knows what happens to them,” he said.
