Benedictine Athletes finish on top at Colombo Zonal Meet
View(s):Benedictines dominated the Colombo Zonal athletic meet 2017 securing 135 points, with St. Peter’s College in second place with 72 points and Royal coming in at third place with 68 points at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksha Stadium on 26th and 27th May 2017.
Benedictine displayed their superiority especially in under 20, under 18 and under 16 age segments and in the relays.
In under 20s, Bens won both the 4×100 M and 4X400M relays, skipper Shiran Jegananthen came first in 400 M Hurdles event and 3rd in 400M event and played a major role in the relays. Sri Lankan Junior athlete Shammi Lakshan came second in 200Mand 400M and third in 100M races. Lahiru Cooray came third in 200M, Mahela Jayatissa continued his good form in jumps coming first in Long Jump and second in Triple Jump. Sajan Rodrigo and Pathum Nimalsha Silva came 3rd in Long Jump and High Jump respectively. In throwing events, Pragathi Ranawaka narrowly missed the 1st place finishing second and Janith Seneviratne took 3rd place in both Putt Shot and Discus events.
In their strongest segment, the under 18s, Bens clearly towered over the rest. Yohan Danushka Silva dominated the sprints, winning both 100M and 200M events. Sadeepa Dilshan won the 110M Hurdles event and Dilan Bogoda had an outstanding meet winning 400M Hurdle , 2nd in 400M and 3rd in 200M, Visal Saminda came 2nd in 800M event. Bens easily won 4X100M and 4X400M relays. In Throwing events Isuru Dilhara Perera came 2nd in both Putt Shot and Discus Throw events and Dilshan Bandara finished 2nd in Javelin Throw.
In the under 16 age category too, Bens fared strongly with Anuja Prabaswara coming 1st in 200M and 2nd in 100M races. In 400M event Pasindu Malshan came 1st and Sasindu Bandara finished 3rd, Uvindu Malsha came 3rd in 300M Hurdles and Bens won 4X100M Relay and came 3rd in 4X400M Relay. Sadun Wijesinghe came 2nd in both Putt Shot and Discus events. In under 12 age group Angelo Fonseka won 1st place in Long Jump . 4X50M relay team came in 3rd place, under 12 relay team members were Angelo Fonseka, Kevin Leonard, Andrew Anthonyraj and Nigel Fernando.
Benedictines who fared creditably in 2016 expected to consolidate their position as one of the strongest combinations in 2017. They are coached by National Coach Chaminda Perera as Head Coach, Nuwan Abeywickrama as Assistant Coach and Master in Charge, Jeewantha Prasad , Throwing Coach and Augustine Appuhamy , the Jumping Coach. The Sports co-ordinator Rev. Bro. Praveen Vaz is a source of great strength to the team and Rev. Bro. Henry Dissanayake , Director of St. Benedict’s College.
