Short -term solutions to the garbage crisis
Colombo which appeared like a Garden City during the Commonwealth Heads of State conference has become a garbage dump after the Meetotamulla tragedy.
It is not the best practice to dump garbage without any pre-treatment, amidst protests by residents in the area to the environmental pollution from untreated garbage dumps.
Recently, the Municipal Council garbage collection staff who visit homes have refused to accept disposable nappies and sanitary napkins. What can householders without garden space do with them? Short term solutions, in addition to sorting of garbage is required by the Municipal Councils, Provincial Councils and the various Ministries and statutory bodies.
Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen (or any halogen). It involves the simultaneous change of chemical composition and physical phase, and is irreversible. Alibaba website displayed many companies exporting waste treatment equipment all over the world. This Pyrolysis Gasification Municipal Incineration Plant, from Dongying Jiachuan Commerce and Trade Co, attracted my attention.
My view is that all our local authorities should get the help of the Chinese Embassy to install municipal waste disposal plants suitable for them and stop the dumping of garbage the way it was done in Meetotamulla.
