A group of youth gathered on FaceBook (FB) last week took steps to restore the library of the Dudley Senanayake College, Pitabeddara, Matara, which was completely destroyed by the recent floods.
The youth donated about 2,000 books, tables and racks for the library. After seeing the devastation caused to the library, the members of the group named “Ekamuthu Wemu Udaw Karamu” started collecting funds for the task. They were able to collect around Rs 600,000, of which Rs 300,000 was from friends in Bahrain.

Organisers said they also received a large number of books at their collection centres in Ja-Ela, Negombo, Wadduwa, Kalutara, Madiwela and Anuradhapura areas, adding that, Mr Sirisumana Godage of Godage Bookshop also offered them books worth Rs 750,000, for only Rs 303,703, on getting to know about their project. The books were also transported to Matara by Godage Bookshop.  They said the group which was started in 2013, had helped victims of each and every disaster since 2014. Currently, it has around 40,000 members.

“Our main intention is to help people who did not receive any help. We were able to help people immediately after the disasters. We will provide another set of books needed for the library, in the future.”

This FB aid group also conducted the removal of garbage in Sri Pada, book donations for students in Sunday Schools and donation of water filters for a school.
