CID action against those provoking religious or ethnic tension
Individuals or groups trying to provoke religious or ethnic hatred on social media are to be monitored and action taken against them by the Criminal Investigations Department, a senior official said. Law and Order Ministry Secretary Jagath Wijeweera told the Sunday Times the decision was taken following a meeting with the police and other agencies.
He said the CID’s cyber crimes division would also closely monitor blogs, photographs and videos uploaded and take action against those found responsible for provoking hatred.
The measures are part of Government plans to reduce religious and ethnic tension.
So far, the Police have received 21 complaints against individuals or groups inciting religious or ethnic hatred. Fourteen complaints have been received of attacks on religious places, business establishments and private residences. At least, 15 suspects have been arrested so far over the incidents.
Mr Wijeweera said that Deputy Inspector Generals had been instructed to take action against persons inciting ethnic or religious tension or promoting violence.
He said an appeal through the community police unit also had been made to religious leaders to help prevent the spread of religious or ethnic hatred.
