The staff and volunteers of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Sri Lanka, along with the Nagoda Divisional Secretariat joined Mapalagama Central College, Nagoda, Galle District, on June 24, to help the school get back on its feet, as Nagoda was severely affected by the recent floods and landslides.

They cleaned the compound, repaired and re-painted classrooms, and distributed school supplies and books to the students, as their library was flooded. This volunteer work was conducted as the 4th ‘Yamu Yamu’ (Let’s Go) activity, the Korean Embassy said in a news release. The KOICA Sri Lanka Office has organised Yamu Yamu activities on a regular basis, with group exercises and games arranged for local children and students, especially from marginalised backgrounds.

One of the pillars of KOICA’s volunteer programme is to promote socio-economic development at the grass-root level. Currently, about 80 KOICA volunteers are engaged in voluntary work in various parts of Sri Lanka, where the local need for expertise, knowledge and experience arises in the fields of Korean language teaching, computer education, social welfare, etc.
