Breakthrough imminent in Rs 7.7 million heist in Ragama, say Police
View(s):A breakthrough in the Rs 7.7 million heist in Ragama is expected shortly, as a joint operation by the Ragama Police and the Kelaniya SSP Division has uncovered vital information regarding the incident, which could lead to the arrest of the culprits shortly, said Kelaniya Division SP Upul Jayasinghe.
He said four teams are investigating the incident, while CCTV footage is also being scrutinised.
The robbery occurred last Monday around 10.50 am, when money of a leading textile shop in Wattala was being transported by van to its Kadawatha branch.
As the van passed Basilica College Ragama, a car following the van had overtaken it and blocked the road. Two men armed with T56 guns had got out of the car, forced open the door of the van and taken the money. They had shot two tyres of the van, before fleeing the scene in the car.
Although CCTV footage showed the registration number of the car, police later found it was a fake number.
Police said the company had not taken the minimum security measures when transporting such a large amount of money.
Police Divisions had instructed area business companies to take adequate security measures when transporting money, while the police are also providing security at the request of the companies, if they cannot get it themselves.
