Unauthorised constructions at Mount Lavinia

I have been living in Mount Lavinia for nearly 45 years and fairly familiar with the surroundings of Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia and Ratmalana.

My first observation is that the Mount beach had unauthorised sheds and huts 50 years ago. Now they have been converted to hotel and guest houses. The Coast Conservation Department promised to retake all the stolen land from the beach, but yet though the law is there it is not being executed.

The problem is that the local authorities have provided water and electricity to these units making it ”legal” as far as the owners are concerned.

One hut adjoining the Surf Club, the only legal building, has recently converted this hut to a cement building. I think the newspaper should pursue the Coast Conservation and threaten to expose them for them to come out of obviously political connections.
