Peradeniya University concludes Diamond Jubilee celebrations
View(s):The Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the University of Peradeniya (UoP) was concluded over the weekend.
The first ceremony was held at the Catholic Church with High Mass, followed by prayers in the evening at the Kovil and Mosque.
This was followed by an alms-giving for 75 Buddhist monks at the Senate building, where UoP Graduates conducted the ceremonies. They were the Anunayake of Asgiri Ven. Panditha Anamaduwe Dhaadassi Thera and the Anunayake of Malwatta Rajakeeyaa Pandidta Niyagoda Viithsiri Thera.
Both Thera’s spoke of the vision of Sir Ivor Jennings both in Education and Environment. The Thera’s said the present pleasing environment is for the most part the work of Sir Ivor. They paid a tribute to his vision to bring about an understanding of Education and Cultures.
UoP Chancellor Prof K.M. de Silva said there is no one who had paid much attention to the UoP other than Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake, and the impetus was given to Sir Ivor to carry on the work at the University. He said he brought about a University system which this country could boast of as being second to none.

Madduma Bandara speaking on the ‘Vision for the future”, at the closing sessions held at the Faculty of Arts Theater, said that, in the modern context, Universities, particularly, those in the countryside, have to be vigilant on what is happening around them, often in the name of development.
