Principals Service Union agree to resolve issues
View(s):In a discussion held last week, with the Principals Service (PS) trade union, the Ministry of Education (MoE) consented to resolve several issues pertaining to the PS in National schools. The MoE agreed to backdate and offer the same date for all Letters of Appointments given at different periods in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014, from the results of the exam held in 2006, in keeping with the previous Principal Service Minute (PSM).
Recommendations have also been made to the Public Service Commission to exempt these officers from language proficiency in English. The Sri Lanka Public Administration Circular No. 1/2014 stipulates that all officers promoted to the PS should acquire proficiency in the link language, within 3 years of the date of Appointment. Clause 9 of the PSM emphasises on this requirement.
Also, the failure of Provincial Councils to give postings to the promoted Principals was taken up. The Principals have not been given schools, despite having passed the exams in 2015.
A scheme to grant foreign scholarships to school Principals was also discussed at the meeting. - Chrishanthi Christopher
