Mihiliya and Ravindu grab major honours at Air Force squash c’ships
View(s):Mihiliya Methsarani and Ravindu Laksiri grabbed major honours by winning the Women’s and Men’s championships respectively at the 12th Air Force Open Squash Championship worked off at the Air Force squash courts recently.
Organised by the Sri Lanka Airforce and conducted under the national body, over 300 participants took part in this year’s edition of the event.
In the Woen’s Open finals Mihiliya met Fathoum Issadeen and the 6th time national champion made a plain sail to clinched the title scoring a 3-0 victory. The top national champ never allowed her opponent to settle down beating her 11/1, 11/8 and 11/2 in the three sets.
Ravindu Laksiri too made a clean sweep to emerge winner in the Men’s Open defeating his usual opponent Shamil Wakeel with a 3-0 win. In the first two sets Wakeel went down fighting 11/7, 11/7 and in the third set Laksiri went ahead with an easy 11/4 win to emerge winner in the Open Men’s finals.
Apart from the Open events championships were held in the Under 19, Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 age categories for boys and girls while Novices championship for both men and women made the event more competitive.
Chief Guest Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathi distributed awards, certificates and cash awards for the winners were assisted by Air Vice Marshal Sumangala Dias, Suranjith Premadasa, President of the Sri Lanka squash Federation and members of the Air Force Director Board.
