GMOA says newly formed alliance against SAITM will discuss further trade union action
View(s):The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) will meet members of political parties and trade unions on Tuesday to decide further trade union action over the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).
GMOA’s Assistant Secretary Dr. Naveen De Soysa said their newly formed movement “SAITM Virodi Jana Pawra” has attracted members of more than 12 political parties and political groups including the Joint Opposition, the Jathika Hela Urumaya and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). He said about 180 trade unions were also supporting the campaign.
“The movement has committees at district level and we hope to hold a national meeting where we will discuss further trade union action,” he said.
Meanwhile a media statement issued by SAITM stated that a tri-party agreement would be signed to formally hand over the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital to the government. The hospital will function as a state hospital offering free healthcare with effect from August 1, the statement said.
The agreement will be signed by SAITM chairman, Health Ministry secretary and the General Manager Bank of Ceylon.
