A special Insurance scheme will be introduced for students following Vocational Training courses, as several incidents were reported causing serious injuries to students during their practical training period, said Minister of Skills Development & Vocational Training, Chandima Weerakkody. Under the programme titled “Sisu Suraksha”, more than 120,000 students following Motor Mechanics, Construction, Electricity courses etc will be insured, with compensation paid immediately to the students.

The Minister added that several incidents are reported daily causing serious and minor injuries to the students, while sometimes students are reported to be paralyzed or dead. He said although the companies that handle the training claim the students are insured, in reality they are not, while many could not even pay the hospital bill. He said according to the new scheme, compensation will be paid to the victims via the Ministry, adding that, tenders have already been called for the programme.
